Vuzix 310XL [Review & Giveaway]

I know what you’re thinking. Who in their right mind would walk around with Terminator aka Star Trek glasses glued to their face…all in the name of technology? I have to admit, I used to be one of you.  But after trying out the Vuzix 310XL…my mind has been changed forever.  Call me a nerd if you want, but while you are squinting on that time little iPhone/iPod screen, I am watching the same film on the big screen.

Wrap™ 310XL

Styling, performance and versatility all in a 16:9 widescreen format. The Vuzix Wrap 310XL video eyewear is a new class of video eyewear offering designer styling with unmatched features and performance.

Styling Like Never Before

Stylish eyewear, at home beside the pool or at 35,000 feet, the Wrap 310XL sunglass-style widescreen eyewear allows you to watch your favorite movies and videos without attracting stares. And, if you are looking to be even more stylish the Wrap lens can be replaced with alternate colors to suit your mood of style.

Unmatched Performance

The virtual 55 inch* Wrap 310XL screen offers unmatched performance. It displays both standard 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios and plays standard 2D and side-by-side format 3D movies. A Vuzix Auto 3D feature automatically enables the 3D viewing configuration when supporting media is played.

* Equivalent screen size as seen from 10 feet (approximately 3m).

Includes Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad compatible cable.*

Review

Fresh out of the box, these glasses are a bit overwhelming.  With multiple wires and connectors, it takes a minute to get the right ones hooked up to the right things.  But, just like any brand new toy, the Vuzix 310XL were worth the wait.  After the earphones were hooked up and the nose bridge configured, the glasses were on my face and I was watching a few episodes of Lost in no time.  The viewing experience was more like a big screen t.v. than a movie screen, but that’s really tit for tat.  Bottom line - it wasn’t nearly as difficult as watching it on a 4 inch screen - something that will come in handy while traveling or relaxing in bed.  I will say that the glasses are a tad bit heavy for viewing sitting up, so I recommend laying down or at least leaning back while viewing; very similar to what is shown on the website.

The only downside to the Vuzix 310XL is that while using it with the iPhone/iPod/iPad, the only supported videos are from YouTube or videos purchased from the Apple store.  I would love to see an integration with the newest feature; live streaming of your NetFlix queue.

Features

* Supports 4:3 and 16:9 display formats
* Adjustable brightness, contrast and color saturation
* Works with 2D and common 3D video formats including side-by-side and anaglyph
* Supports “Vuzix Auto-3D”, automatic 3D detection technology[1]
* NTSC and PAL compatible
* Connects to all video devices with composite video
* Six hours use with 2 AA alkaline batteries
* Video zoom mode

Rock the Bells 2010: Lauryn Hill

After months of going back and forth and tons of speculation, Lauryn Hill took the stage at Rock the Bells 2010 with confidence and poise. More grown than we have ever seen her in the past, L-Boogie came out rockin’ with a 10 minute rendition of her instantaneous classic, Lost Ones, eventually leading into a few other songs from the album that moved her from ‘female emcee’ to ‘hip hop icon,’ The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

While I would love to say that her performance blew me away, I just can’t bring myself to do it. Hill went hoarse after the second song, consistently taking breaks and reverted to singing the low parts to all of her songs. Half way through her set, she deviated from the originally scheduled program [classic acts doing their classic albums in their entirety] but no one seemed to mind. This was after all, the infamous, Lauryn Hill.

Heineken Inspire: Hip-Hop & Heinekens All Night Long [Events]

This past weekend Heineken hosted a FREE event in Culver City, as part of their four city tour around the county.  Kicking off in Miami, we were very happy to have the Inspire Tour stop in the City of Angels, with performances by Fabolous, Ryan Leslie and the legendary DJ Jazzy Jeff.

With two jam packed days of events, Saturday seemed to be the day to see or be seen.  Heineken pulled out all the stops with the beer flowing all night, fresh pannini’s, sliders and tacos and the interesting addition of a live silk screen opportunity, turning the fans into fashion designers on the spot.

Lara Croft And The Guardian Of Light [Review]

It certainly has been some time since there was a Lara Croft title worth playing. But Xbox Live’s “Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light” breathes life into the franchise that featured a leading lady most pre-teens drooled over. Considering that it has nothing to do with “Tomb Raider” in style or game play, one could be a little concerned with this new gaming experience. But it’s safe to say that this game is a pleasant departure from previous installments and a welcome addition to any gamers library.

Let’s get the bad out of the way first, the game’s story is complete nonsense and only present to give you a reason to play. Ms. Croft uncovers an ancient mirror in the Yucatan Peninsula that unleashes an evil demon. The Guardian of Light, Totec, awakens to assist Lara on her quest to save the world from the demon. It’s pretty lame but it doesn’t hurt the gaming experience.

The game employs an overhead camera - reminiscent of Gauntlet or Diablo - as Laura explores, shoots, jumps and figures out puzzles. It’s pretty straightforward but is still a lot of fun to play. A second player can join the fray as Totec (who looks utterly ridiculous as an Aztec warrior burning down enemies with a flamethrower, but whatever) and that’s when the game really gets fun. The dynamic duo have to help one another to get through many of the game’s puzzles. Totec can toss spears that the lightweight Lara can hop on to get to certain areas. Lara has a grappling hook that assists Totec across chasms. It’s all pretty interesting when put to work. The only drawback is that the co-op feature is only offline.

The visuals are handled very well. A tremendous amount of detail is paid to the areas that Lara has to explore. With the exception of destroyed towers vanishing once they hit the ground, this is a good looking game.

What makes the game even better is its replay value. The levels have secondary tasks that will make you want to play over and over to complete. They range from relatively easy to mildly difficult but it extends the life of the game well after you get past the goofy footed story. As you complete puzzles you’ll get an upgrade to your arsenal. Although you and Totec start with pistols and spears (respectively), you’ll soon be blasting at monsters with flamethrowers and M-16s.

Ultimately, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is a fulfilling experience. Aside from the lame story and no online co-op, the game is a good reason to have extra room on your hard drive and the $15 price tag is quite tempting.

Pros

- A great departure from the “Tomb Raider” series

- Clever puzzles that work well with co-op mode

- Great replay value for $15

Cons

- The story is terrible.

- No online co-op mode

- Did I say the story was complete nonsense?

Rating: 3.75 out of 5

Cynthia Rowley, known for her high style, is kissing your boo-boos. Well, sort of. She’s teamed up with Band-Aid to bring a lovely little collection of “Dress-Up Band-Aids.”

$10 gets you a chic metal tin of 20 ( buy them here).  One dollar from the sale of each tin will go to Design Ignites Change, an organization that engages high school and college students in design and architecture projects that address social issues in their own communities. Wherever Left Eye is, I hope she knows her impact is still being felt in the most whimsical and hearty ways.

Do you have a specific diet menu? What would be a typical day look like? Thanks Ms. Jazzy for being so helpful!

Yes!!

No sugars, salts…or pretty much anything tasty.  Green veggies and unseasoned chicken breast with lemon and lime.

I know it sounds hardcore, but its only for a short time.

Call phones from Gmail

Thats right, Google is introducing to users over the next few days a way to call telephones directly from your Gmail account. The service has been rumored ever since Google bought out Gizmo5, but now it is actually rolling out. For the rest of the year, user will be able to make calls to the US and Canada completely free, and to other countries at very low rates.

How does it work? It is all pretty simple, while in your gmail, just click “Call phone” at the top of your chat list and dial a number or enter a contact’s name. That’s it.

Whats even cooler, at least in my eyes, is that Google will be putting red phone booths in college campuses, airports and such so people can try out GV.
